Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I sit my JAA examinations in Australia or do I have to return to the UK?
Western Australian Aviation College has an approved examinations centre in Perth, Western
Australia.
Can I take my flight tests in Australia?
All flight tests with the exception of the Instrument Rating Flight Test are conducted in
Australia. The Instrument Rating Flight Test is conducted through the UK Civil Aviation
Authority at their Cranfield (UK) testing centre.
Will I need a medical?
It is recommended that a JAA Class 1 medical be obtained prior to starting the
JAA Airline Integrated Training Program. Initial issue examinations can only be carried out at the UK Civil
Aviation Authority Aeromedical centre based at Gatwick Airport. At 7/6/05 the charge is
GBP422. Booking arrangements can be made by contacting +44 (0)1293 573700. Arrangements
should be made well in advance. It is also possible to obtain a validation of a JAA class
1 medical certificate issued by another mutually recognised JAA state. This is not
possible in the case of a non JAA class 1 medical certificate
Will I qualify for a CASA or a JAA licence ?
On completion of the JAA Airline Integrated Training Program, you will have the option of
conducting further training to qualify for the Australian (CASA) licence. Minimal
extra training would be required.
Is the price quoted all inclusive?
With the exception of food, accommodation, local visa processing, licensing fees,
examination and flight testing fees imposed by the licensing authorities we have tried very
hard to produce an all inclusive price. Full cooking facilities are available within the
College's accommodation. Hot meals are also available on site, seven days a week within
the College building.
Will Western Australian Aviation College find me an airline job ?
Our JAA Airline Integrated Training Program is designed to give you the best possible chance of
securing that all important first job. Through careful selection and a focused program of
training we believe you will be highly attractive to airline recruiters.
Can I convert my existing professional licence with Western Australian Aviation
College?
Yes. We can offer modular courses of training for the JAA licence. This
enables you to convert an ICAO CPL or ATPL. Please see Modular Training
page for more detail.
I already have a PPL, can I join the Western Australian Aviation College JAA
Airline Integrated Training Program? Yes you can. Subject to acceptance, and at the discretion of our Chief
Flying Instructor 50% of your previous flying experience may be credited toward the
course, up to a maximum of 40 hours, or 45 hours if a night qualification is held. This
route qualifies for a reduced course of training and a price reduction on the standard
program.
What is the accommodation like?
It is located close to the airport and all amenities are within a short walk. Mostly, the College has 4 or 5 bedroom houses which are
very spacious. Bedrooms are exclusive and secured, dining and lounge facilities are shared
with other students. More information is available on the
accommodation
page.
Is a JAA licence the right one for me?
The JAA licence is accepted throughout Europe and recognised in many other countries
worldwide. It is very difficult to obtain a JAA licence from conversion of a non-JAA
professional licence. Very little credit is given to non-JAA commercial licence
holders. Please also bear in mind whilst the licence has worldwide appeal, you must have a
right to live and work in the country of employment.
Are distance learning correspondence courses available?
Only for the JAA ATPL(A) Ground School course.
Which is best - Modular or Integrated?
Neither, both are excellent well-structured ways of obtaining a licence. Historically,
major airlines have preferred to deal with colleges offering integrated courses of
training, rather than conduct costly recruitment campaigns of their own, and so the
prospects of employment on completion of a course have rightly or wrongly been on the side
of those having completed the integrated course.
Can I go on to do a type rating following completion of the JAA
Airline Integrated Training Program?
The final stage of the JAA Airline Integrated Training Program is conducted in JAR approved Flight
Simulators (FFS). On completion of the course you may wish to
continue your training and gain a type rating. The decision is one that will require a lot
of thought, and of course will have to be made in light of job prospects at the time.
Although the airline industry can be volatile, at the present time it would look to be a
good investment decision.
What is the minimum age for the JAA Airline Integrated Training
Program?
Due to visa restrictions within Australia, a student may not apply for, or enrol on a
course of training until he or she has reached his or her 18th birthday.
Can I work in Australia?
Whilst in Australia on a student visa, it is possible to apply to the Immigration
Department for permission to conduct limited part-time work. It should be stressed however
the JAA Airline Integrated Training Program is a very demanding course and students are advised to avoid
where possible entering into additional commitments away from the college. Bear in mind
the JAA Airline Integrated Training Program is a full-time 60-week course requiring attendance from
Monday to Friday 08.30 to 17.00.
I am currently undertaking JAA training. Can I transfer to Western Australian
Aviation College?
Possibly. If you wish to move from one training provider to another you must contact the
UK CAA Personnel Licencing Department (PLD) and request an assessment. PLD will be able to
advise you, the College is not allowed to make the decision. PLD can be contacted on +44
(0)1293 573700.
Can I obtain a University degree as part of my course?
Successful completion of the JAA Airline Integrated Training Program with Western Australian
Aviation College positions the student to progress towards an Advanced Diploma in
Aviation. Under the articulation arrangement held with Murdoch University, should you
wish, you may proceed to years 2 and 3, and on successful completion gain a
