Official Newsletter of the Western Australian Aviation College – June 2007

From the Principal's Desk

Welcome once again to Centreline. Our latest Advanced Diploma and JAR students have started training at the College and have settled in nicely. Once again we have a great mix of people from a variety of different backgrounds and it is great to see them all bond as groups. Flying training is always a more enjoyable and rewarding experience if you are surrounded by a group of people who can offer support and encouragement throughout the course.

Congratulations are in order for JAR 1 course. They sat their first block of theory exams last month and achieved fantastic results. It is great to see all their hard work pay off. I am confident that they will enjoy similar success in the next block of exams in May.

Another new member has joined the College and strengthened our ‘European contingent’. Stefano Maretto has moved over from Italy and will start as a flying instructor. Stefano holds a U.K. CAA JAR Instructor Rating and has extensive instructional experience in single and multi-engined aircraft. We welcome him and look forward to working with him.

Our JAR CFI, Steve, had a very successful trip to the U.K. recently. He manned our stand at the Flyer Flight Training Show in London and talked to a large number of potential customers. He also did some qualification checks with the CAA and is now fully approved to conduct JAR CPL Flight Examinations and 170A check rides. To achieve so much in such a short trip was an enormous effort on Steves part and we congratulate him on these fantastic results.

All in all its been another busy and dynamic period as we continue to build our team to manage the increase in customer numbers that we are seeing. It is an exciting time in our industry and we look forward to the coming period with great anticipation.

Safe Flying!

This month's funnies

A doctor says to his patient, "I have bad news and worse news".
"Oh dear, what's the bad news?" asks the patient.
The doctor replies, "You only have 24 hours to live."
"That's terrible", said the patient. "How can the news possibly be worse?"
The doctor replies, "I've been trying to contact you since yesterday."

Qantas Extends Services to South Africa

In April Qantas announced it will increase its services between Australia and South Africa during December 2007 and January 2008.

The airline will offer six additional return services from Sydney to Johannesburg via Perth to cater for demand during the popular school holiday travel season.

The extra services will be operated by Boeing 747-300 aircraft throughout the two months.

Virgin Blue Creates 1100 Australian Jobs with New International Airline

Virgin Blue Airlines took a significant step towards creating Australia’s newest international airline in March with the signing of a multi-billion dollar aircraft order.

The airline signed a $2.2 billion deal for six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and options for six additional aircraft from The Boeing Company.

Virgin Blue’s Chief Executive has confirmed that the airline will be launched in 2008 and that it will create more Australian jobs, bringing more tourists into the country and providing choice on the Trans Pacific route.

The long haul project team is currently recruiting key management team members. Within the first twelve months of its operation, the long haul airline will create 1160 Australian based jobs including cabin crew, pilots and ground crew. Virgin Blue has set up a section on it’s website for early expressions of interest (www.virginblue.com.au under About Us > Jobs).

Emirates Focus on Western Australia

The Chief Executive of Emirates Airlines met with WA’s Tourism Minister, Shelia McHale in April to discuss future plans and tourism initiatives between the UAE and Western Australia.

Emirates Holidays’ efforts to promote Australia have lead to a dramatic 23 per cent growth in its tourist numbers to the country in 2006-07.

Emirates services to Perth have kept up with demand. In December 2006 Emirates increased its capacity to Perth, upgrading EK421 from an Airbus A340-300 offering 267 seats to a Boeing 777-300ER with 364 seats, a jump of 36 per cent.

A total of 654 seats are available daily between Perth and Dubai and more than 2,000 people travel to Perth on the Emirates flights each week.

Global Airline Growth

Over the past twenty years we have seen the use of air travel grow extensively. In 2005 more than two billion passengers and 40 per cent of the world’s manufactured exports were moved by air.

Not surprisingly it is China that has experienced the biggest growth in air travel since the 1980’s. Just 25 years ago, there were a total of 180 air routes in China and only 3.43 million passengers took to the skies each year. Incredibly in 2004 China overtook Japan as the largest air travel market in Asia and is now second only to the US in terms of total scheduled departing seats.

While not experiencing the same growth rate of China there have also been soaring numbers for air travel both internationally and domestically in WA.

Once there was only two direct flights to Sydney each day – at noon and 11.55pm. Today, Qantas has up to seven flights a day to both Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane twice a day, Adelaide five times a day and Canberra once a day.

And in another 20 years? Well if trends continue it will be London ten times daily for $700 in today’s dollars and Sydney will be on the hour for $150 return.

PPL Helicopter Correspondence Course

If you can't find time to get to our in-house helicopter theory courses then our PPL or CPL correspondence courses are the ideal solution for you. Both courses assume no prior knowledge and will take you all the way from BAK (Basic Aeronautical Knowledge) level up to your choice of PPL or CPL.

JAA MODULAR COURSE

The Western Australian Aviation College offers Modular training to existing licence holders and those wishing to gain a JAA licence through the modular route.
The modular route allows you to train at your own pace, which for those unable to commit to the integrated course provides for a viable alternative. From a financial point of view you can generally continue to work, and can pay for your training as and when funds are available. Alternatively you may already have a licence and wish to either go on to gain a Commercial Licence or convert an existing professional licence to the JAA equivalent
